Balderhead Fishery Information
Balderhead Fishery is located in Hexham and is run as a wild fishery by Northumbrian Water. The reservoir is 275 acres with a depth ranging from 11 to 20 feet. There is a good stock of wild brown trout in this reservoir that promises to keep you busy if you choose the right fly for the right time of year. This is a fly fishing only venue, and it is located high up in the moors. So, pack some warm clothes and a flask of tea! If you wrap up warm and use the right fly, you’ll be sure to have a lot of fun on this wild venue!
What size do the fish go to?
As this is a wild fishery, there isn’t too much information about the size of the fish, sadly. However, there are some big brown trout in this water, and if you’re lucky, you could be catching trout to over 20lbs!
What tactics work well?
Again, as this is a natural and wild water, natural flies are best. The reservoir sees small, black terrestrial flies. So, the recommended flies to use on this water are Black Pennell, Butcher, Black and Peacock Spider and Zulu flies.
What facilities are on site?
This is a wild and natural venue, so there are no facilities on this site.
Is parking available?
There is a car park located at Grassholme reservoir, which is also where you can buy a day ticket. Day tickets for this fishery are also available on the website. The ticket is £7 for 12 fish.
