Fishery Information
Castlefore Lake, also known as Castlefore Lough, is a mesotrophic freshwater located in northwest Ireland. Known for its good coarse fishing, the lake is capable of providing terrific catch returns that include bream, hybrids, roach and tench. Castlefore Lake has limited bank fishing, but access along the road side is excellent with new fishing stands. Despite the presence of a few spots along the facing bank, anglers rarely venture across.
The lake is home to a diverse range of species including bream, skimmer bream, roach, hybrids, tench, pike and perch. It’s important to note that the lake’s ecology is under threat from invasive species such as curly waterweed, zebra mussel, and freshwater clams. Nonetheless, the lake remains a popular spot for anglers, offering the chance for some truly rewarding catches.
What size do the fish go to?
The size of fish varies by species, with hybrids reported up to 2lbs and roach and bream going up to 4lbs. The lake also has a native Irish strain of pike, known locally as ‘liús’, which can reach up to 8 pounds (3.6 kg).
What tactics work well?
Pre-baiting has been found to be quite essential for catching fish at Castlefore Lake. Popular fishing methods that work well here include pole fishing and bread feeder. Some anglers have reported success in the evening, catching hybrids with a groundbait feeder while others have caught tench on the pole.
What facilities are on site?
Facilities at Castlefore Lake are somewhat limited, but there are new fishing stands along the roadside which provide excellent access. There are five double platforms available for use. Local tackle shops include Shannon Tackle in Jamestown and Tooman’s Tackle in Carrick-on-Shannon.
Is parking available?
Yes, parking is available. From Keshcarrigan, take the R209 towards Fenagh and the lake is approximately two miles on your right hand side. The first two platforms and car park are visible the moment you reach the lake. Further platforms and additional access are found another half-mile down, through a farm gate.
