A members-only site for the Welwyn Garden City Angling Club, Holwell Court Lake emphasizes the carp in a big way.
Holwell Court is located just outside the Welwyn Garden City Town Centre, just off the A414 Hertford Road route.
This is an estate coarse fishery with plenty of fish to catch, but the carp are apparent. They are found of zipping around the surface in the summer months.
Most anglers report significant success at Holwell Court Lake, which suggests these waters are easy. That doesn’t seem to be particularly true, as plenty of fight is in these fish. But there are catches to be had and sport to be found, guaranteeing a quality day on the water.
Membership is available at the Welwyn Garden City Angling Club. This Club cares a lot about Holwell Court and maintains it well, but at times the water levels may fall. At these times, the organization will close the lake for the protection of the fish. Check with the website for more information on the water status.
What size do the fish go to?
Carp up to 26 pounds, catfish up to 45 pounds, and bream up to 10 pounds can be found at Holwell Court Lake.
What tactics work well?
As the carp dig the surface, that’s as good a place to start as any. These fish do venture to the deep end in the winter months, so plan accordingly.
Strawberry mini-boilies are popular for the carp, with loose pellets. This approach works well even in the margins.
Luncheon meat seems best to land the big catfish.
No keepnets or carp sacks.
Unhooking mats necessary.
Is parking available?
There is parking at Holwell Court Lake. Members must pass through a combination locked gate.
