Fishery Information

Located in the village of Sutterton and not far from Boston, Lincolnshire is the quaint and secluded Lake Helen. The easiest route is from the main A17 that runs close to the fishery.

A three acre lake in an L-shape, Lake Helen is a day ticket fishery and also offer night fishing. The water is well-stocked mainly with a fine head of carp, plus perch, eels., bream, tench and roach. There are plenty of specially constructed platforms around the water.

Lake Helen reaches a depth of 12 feet and also offers challenges such as reed beds and lily pads, in what is a picturesque and tranquil setting. The fishery caters well for disabled anglers with a number of specified pegs available.

There is a very large head of good-sized carp in the Lake, and some that are in excess of 20lb. The lake record for common carp is 36lb. Lake Helen is also known for its head of crucian carp, with a record of 5lb 12oz for this species (believed to be a hybrid).

Other interesting coarse fish in Lake Helen include bream in excess of 8lb, chubb of good sizes, and the lake is well known for 9lb eels. Perch, roach and tench are also present, and there is a growing population of Koi, the origins of which are unknown.

For the specialist, catching the only known catfish in Lake Helen is a goal, and this 44lb monster is rarely seen.

What size do the fish go to?

There are plentiful carp in double figures in Lake Helen, including Common, Mirror, Leather and Ghost varieties, as well as the aforementioned crucian carp. Fish heavier than 20lb are difficult but not unknown, with the lake record for common carp standing at 36lb. Goldfish of 5.5lb are close to the British record, and are not an unusual catch.

What tactics work well?

Standard bait works well, with maggots, bread, luncheon meat, sweetcorn and worms recommended.

What facilities are on site?

There are two cottages that can be booked for private fishing. Toilets are provided for day ticket anglers.
