Paxton Pits comprises three distinct areas: a nature reserve overseen by Huntingdonshire District Council (which occupies the southernmost third of the site), a watersports zone (located in the southwest corner of the site, closest to the A1), and an active quarry overseen by Bardon Aggregates. Carp, Tench, Pike, Perch, Catfish, Bream, Roach, Rudd, Crucian Carp, Orfe, and Hybrids are some of the fish caught.
