Lough Allen is a lake located on the River Shannon in northeastern Connacht, Ireland. It spans across County Leitrim and a smaller part in County Roscommon. The lake is situated south of the River Shannon’s source, near the Iron Mountains, and is the uppermost of the three main lakes on the river.

What size do the fish go to?

Lough Allen is famous for its huge pike, with some specimens weighing over 40 lbs. The lake also holds a good selection of 20 lb pike. Additionally, brown trout can be caught in the lake, with average sizes around 1 lb.

What tactics work well?

When fishing in Lough Allen, trolling is considered the most effective method for targeting pike. Anglers can locate pike in the bays, and fishing from the bank is possible during the early months. For brown trout, boat fishing is recommended. Fly and spin fishing techniques are commonly used for trout in the lake. Bream and roach can be found in the river Shannon, specifically from the lake to 300m under the sluice gates.
