Fishery Information
Lough Ramor (Irish: Loch Ramhar) is the largest lake in the area, covering an impressive 800 hectares. Located near Virginia, County Cavan, it’s an outstanding coarse fishery, regularly producing substantial catches of bream, roach, roach-bream hybrids, and perch. It’s also known as a prominent pike venue with large pike having re-established themselves in the lake and many 20lb fish frequently recorded. Some pike even exceed 30lb. This lake is rich in biodiversity and has been identified as a proposed Natural Heritage Area (pNHA) that flows into the Blackwater, a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) under the Natura 2000 wildlife habitat conservation programme.
What size do the fish go to?
Large pike are a staple of Lough Ramor, with many fish weighing around 20lbs regularly reported, and several exceeding 30lbs. Brown trout in the lake range from ½lb to 1½lb, with notable catches each year between 2–5lb. A record trout of 10lb was caught on dry fly in 2004.
What tactics work well?
Various methods are effective for fishing in Lough Ramor. For pike, dead baits, lures, and fly fishing are popular strategies. The color of the lure or fly can be influenced by water clarity and weather conditions. When it comes to trout fishing, wet fly, dry fly, nymph, and streamer techniques are all effective. These tactics can be used from March 1st to September 30th, the designated season for trout fishing.
What facilities are on site?
There are several notable venues at the southern end of the lake, including Virginia, Coronagh, Knocknagartan, the Nine-eyed bridge, and the back of the GAA football field. Access at Knocknagartan is by way of a private road. Boats are also available locally for hire.
Is parking available?
Although it’s not specifically mentioned, access to some areas, such as Knocknagartan, is by private road, suggesting possible parking options. However, due to the location and natural preservation efforts, visitors should confirm parking availability and regulations before visiting.
