Fishery Information

Lough Sheelin is a limestone freshwater lough (lake) located in County Westmeath, County Meath, and County Cavan near the village of Finea and the town of Granard County Longford. It is approximately 8 kilometers long and up to 4 kilometers wide, with an area of approximately 1,880 hectares (4,500 acres). The lake is a rich limestone lough with a capacity to produce and maintain a good stock of large wild brown trout.

The high pH factor of the water, combined with its low average depth profile, gives it excellent trout-producing potential. Recent fish stock surveys carried out by Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) indicate that wild brown trout numbers are as good as they ever were. The average weight based on catch statistics in recent years is about 2 to 3 pounds, but anglers frequently catch fish in the 3 to 7-pound range. Lough Sheelin is managed by Inland Fisheries Ireland in collaboration with the Lough Sheelin Trout Protection Association.

What size do the fish go to?

The wild brown trout in Lough Sheelin average about 2 to 3 pounds, with fish up to 10 pounds and larger being possible. The lake is also home to pike and perch.

What tactics work well?

Lough Sheelin is known for its productive fishing. The lake lies on limestone, giving the water a high pH. The alkaline water ensures fertility, allowing for fast growth and abundant food sources. The lake sustains a fish population above what its size would suggest. Anglers can enjoy dry fly fishing, with plentiful fly populations. The Mayfly hatch brings the lake to life and is a notable event for anglers.

What facilities are on site?

Good public access to the lake is available at both sides of Inny Bridge in Finea village, Kilnahard Quay, Crover Pier, Tonagh Pier, and Sailor’s Garden. Private berthage and access by permission only are available at Crover House Hotel, Captain’s Bay, Rusheen Bay (Coillte via IFI Sheelin), Ross House, and Chamber’s Bay at Mullaghboy House. It’s important to ensure that when parking cars or trailers, the slipway is not blocked.

Lough Sheelin is an IFI-managed wild brown trout fishery, and a fishing permit is required for all angling. Permits can be purchased at local outlets around the lake or online through the IFI website.

Is parking available?

Good public access points to the lake include both sides of Inny Bridge in Finea village, Kilnahard Quay, Crover Pier, Tonagh Pier, and Sailor’s Garden. Private berthage and access by permission only are available at Crover House Hotel, Captain’s Bay, Rusheen Bay (Coillte via IFI Sheelin), Ross House, and Chamber’s Bay at Mullaghboy House.
