Fishery Information

This fishery is run by Ulverston Angling Association.

Sandhall Ponds is a quiet and idyllic water comprising three interconnected ponds. The fishery offers excellent carp fishing, with both Mirror and Common Carp close to 20lbs in weight. Additionally, there is a significant population of Tench in Sandhall Ponds, with some specimens reaching an impressive 8lb mark. A variety of other mixed coarse fish also inhabit the ponds, providing a diverse angling experience.

What size do the fish go to?

The carp in Sandhall Ponds have thrived since being stocked. While the largest fish initially introduced was 8lb, some carp now weigh twice that size, with the largest fish caught to date weighing just over 17lb. There is a belief among the fishery management that the water has the potential to produce carp exceeding the magic 20lbs mark in the future.

What tactics work well?

To target the carp in Sandhall Ponds, anglers can use various carp fishing techniques, such as float fishing, ledgering, or using boilies or pellets as bait. Tench fishing can be rewarding, and a variety of baits, including worms and maggots, can be effective. The presence of other mixed coarse fish provides opportunities for traditional coarse fishing methods, such as float fishing or feeder fishing.

What facilities are on site?

A new bridge was installed to accommodate disabled anglers, and additional pegs for disabled anglers have since been added. The fishery management has also made significant improvements to the paths and pegs, ensuring a comfortable and accessible fishing experience for all anglers.

Is parking available?

There is limited parking available for about 6 cars at the roadside. Anglers can access the fishery by following directions from the M6 Motorway, taking Junction 36 and following the A590 and signs to Barrow-in-Furness. Upon reaching Ulverston, anglers should take the second left (just after the pelican crossing) onto Quebec Street (A5078) and follow the signs for Bardsea. After about 1/2 mile, take the next left past the Ulverston Outdoor Leisure Centre onto West End Lane. Continue for approximately 200 yards and take the first sharp right onto Brick Kiln Lane, where Sandhall Ponds will appear to the left.
