St. John’s Lough, also known as St. John’s Lake, is an irregularly shaped freshwater lake located in south County Leitrim, in northwest Ireland. It is part of the wider Shannon-Erne Waterway tourist attraction. The lake’s ecology, along with the Shannon system, is threatened by pollution and invasive species such as curly waterweed, zebra mussel, and freshwater clam.

The lake is known for its good head of carp, with most over 20lb, over forty 30lb+, and seven over 40lb. Tench and Catfish are also present, with tench weighing over 12lb and bream over 15lb. Pike up to 20lbs, and historically up to 28lbs, have been caught in the lake.
What tactics work well?
For St. John’s Lough, the following tactics work well:
- Fly Fishing: Fly fishing is the preferred method on the lake, particularly for trout.
- Feeder Fishing: Feeder fishing or using a straight bomb and groundbaiting with a catapult are popular methods, especially for roach and hybrids.
- Baits: Recommended baits include worm, red maggot, caster, and appropriate carp baits for targeting carp.
- Pre-Baiting: To increase the chances of catching bream, pre-baiting may be necessary.
What facilities are on site?
St. John’s Lough offers the following facilities:
- Harbour: There is a harbour with two available boats, providing easy access for cars.

Good parking is available at St. John’s Lough. However, there is a 300-meter walk to the fishing area, which may deter some anglers.
