This fishery is run by Victoria & Biddulph Angling Society.
The Cricket Ground pool is approximately 1.75 acres in size, offering a diverse range of fish species and a suitable environment for anglers of all levels of experience.
What size do the fish go to?
The pool holds massive shoals of small roach, gudgeon, and perch, providing an ideal opportunity for beginners to practice their angling skills. These fish can be easily caught using basic tackle. Additionally, there are significant shoals of skimmer bream, with occasional larger bream present in the pool. Tench weighing around 6lbs can be occasionally caught, adding to the variety of species. The better carp in the pool have been caught up to 24lb+, with the majority ranging from 7 to 14lb. The fishery has also stocked around 600 small carp at an average weight of 1.75lb. While there are a few pike in the pool, their population may be limited compared to other species.
What tactics work well?
For small roach, gudgeon, and perch, basic tackle setups such as a light float rod, small hooks, and maggots or worms as bait can prove effective. Skimmer bream respond well to methods like feeder fishing or ledgering with groundbait and maggot or pellet as bait. When targeting tench, anglers may find success using traditional float fishing or ledgering with a suitable bait like worms or corn. Carp fishing tactics can vary, but popular approaches include using boilies, carp rigs, and effective baiting strategies to entice the larger specimens. For pike, anglers often use deadbaits, lures, or livebaits depending on personal preference and local regulations.
What facilities are on site?
The Cricket Ground pool may offer various facilities to enhance the angling experience. These can include well-maintained fishing pegs or platforms, seating areas, and access points to the water. It is advisable to check with the fishery for specific amenities available on-site, as they may vary.
