Fishery Information
Owned and maintained by the Chelmsford Angling Association, Wicks Mere is a fascinating fishing spot that is developing a significant reputation.
This fishery sizes up at about six acres, with average depths of about 10 feet. Some have reported significant variations in overall depth, which can make for some exciting fishing. At times, these waters can plunge all the way to 20 feet.
Wicks Mere is well-stocked with rudd, bream, tench, roach, carp, and perch. Some reports have turned up large pike.
Night fishing is allowed with a permit and Wicks Mere opens on May 1 each season.
What size do the fish go to?
At Wicks Mere, carp is a big deal. Recent reports had eight carp over the 30-pound mark, with a number of others in the 20-pound range. One big boy clocks in at 40 pounds, so keep an eye out.
Some pike have been caught in the neighbourhood of 25 pounds, creating a great challenge for those anglers into grappling with predator fish. The most common size of pike are in the range of three to a dozen pounds.
There is a large stock of tench in Wicks Mere, weighing in at about two to nine pounds. And roach and skimmers are climbing back into the good graces, with some two-pounders showing up from time to time.
What tactics work well?
According to Chelmsford Angling Association regulations, a maximum of two rods are permitted on all waters. No bait boats or unauthorized swimming are permitted at Wicks Mere. Visitors must obtain the appropriate passes. Dogs are allowed at Wicks Mere, but owners take full responsibility for their pets and the mess they might leave behind.
Is parking available?
Wicks Mere has a car park at the top of the track that leads down to the fishery. There are four spots for disabled anglers, so plan accordingly.
